the temperature has dropped drastically in the last half hour or so. we are down to 84 degrees here in northwest baltimore but the heat index soared over 100 degrees even before noon. health officials want folks to realize this kind of heat is extremely dangerous. >> very, very hot. >> i can't remember a time when it was as hot in maryland. >> folks in baltimore are finding ways to cope with the stifling heat. the entire region is under heat advisory with temperatures over 100 degrees and the heat index soaring even higher. business is hopping at this snow cone and lemonade stand. the state department of health and mental hygiene is hoping people in maryland do just that. the chief medical examiner has declared 23 people have died directly or indirectly due to the heat in maryland 3 >> the

chief medical examiner will look at each case and when there is a determination he contributed to the death directly or because the person had an underlying medical condition and he helped to exacerbate, any time he plays a role in a death, the chief medical examiner will determine that. >> every one of those deaths is potentially preventable the health department urges people who are elderly or have medical problems and no air conditioning. they're asking everyone to take care of themselves. >> take plenty of breaks if they are outside. make sure they are drinking water or gatorade or something like that. most importantly, anybody who doesn't feel well, we want to make sure they take a break and get inside and if they are really feeling uncomfortable, seek medical attention. >> there is still plenty of summer left to feel the heat and that has some dreaming of a cooler place.

that's a strong thunderstorms that will stay alive as across the bay to the eastern shore. elsewhere, things have settled down. this was a strong line of thunderstorms as it came out of pennsylvania, it weakened as it came across. when you get toward baltimore or frederick county, there is steady, beneficial rain. don't expect a weather event out of this. the easternto shore. elsewhere, you guys just get a good soaking rain. we still have a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 9:00 this evening. i don't think they're going to take it down. there's a possibility of heavy weather developing between now and then but the only warning in effect is the 14 anne arundel -- is leigh to -- is the 14 anne

arundel. those storms were pretty strong when they came at the pennsylvania and i can tell you why the weekend when they got into maryland, but they did and it's a good thing. we will just be thankful that they got weaker when they jump out of pennsylvania. the front is going to draft south, walking into maryland and go through the afternoon and stopped just south of us. it will be a slow process to get rid of the heat. the rain cooled things off down to 84 degrees after hitting 102 degrees this afternoon. showers and thunderstorms early tonight. partly cloudy skies later on with temperatures settling back to between 70 degrees and 80 degrees. the front will start just south of us, so we keep a chance for showers and the forecast with temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s. after that, it really cools off. a chance for rain in the picture.

moving through the state tonight. there is the baltimore area, the dark clouds and there were some lightning strikes earlier. >> we saw a lightning strike just right there. >> the strongest thunderstorms right now are south of baltimore. we talked about this a few minutes ago. a severe thunderstorm warning is still in effect for anne arundel county. this is by far the strongest storm out there, just north of the annapolis moving east and capable of producing wind gusts over 60 miles an hour. is moving east and will cross over the water in the next 50 or 20 minutes and had toward centerville. be prepared for that and that's the only game in town as far as separate thunderstorm scope. you can see the line of thunderstorms south of baltimore. it's really just like and

president is throwing his support behind efforts to uphold the controversial dream act. >> the doctor says he sees the benefit of educating all maryland students. >> this is one of the hot button issues. this would allow students whose parents paid maryland taxes to be charged in state tuition rates. the law is being challenged and now voters could decide whether it stays on the books. >> high school students are tied to the success of the dream act. they joined forces with a space, civil-rights, and labor organizations to lobby voters to help keep the law on the books. >> i will never stop learning

internet shows celebrations and syria after news of the death of the defense minister. the un security council met behind closed doors and postpone the vote on a resolution until tomorrow morning. this is after the syrian defense minister and the president's brother were killed in a bombing in damascus. the defense minister is the most senior official to be killed in the fight to oust the president. >> [unintelligible] crashes and then takes his own life. the commuter jet was hoisted out of the airport parking lot on tuesday. they found the body of a pilot and murder suspect inside. he had an apparent self- inflicted gunshot wound. he was on the run after his girlfriend was found dead last friday. at the airport has reopened as the investigation moves forward despite the relative ease with which he stole the plane.

mountains and most of you will get a good soaking rain if you are lucky. we still have a severe thunderstorm watch until 9:00 tonight. i think the weather service will leave that in place. there could be pockets of storms developing tonight. here are the warnings on the eastern shore. 104 degrees this afternoon at bwi. i think those thermometer's need to be calibrated. that breaks the old record set in 1887. the normal high is 87 just to give you a little perspective. relief is in sight as the cold fronts drops down at a pennsylvania. the friend will slide down over the next 24 hours. it's not going to make all the way through until friday but that gives us another chance for beneficial rain as it stalls out thursday and friday.

we are finally getting some relief from the heat. >> not yet, but we will be. is taking severe weather to do it with strong thunderstorms in the state. >> we have had a few strong thunderstorms but this is not a widespread event. the strongest storm is on the eastern shore, in effect until about 6:30, just north of centerville and could produce wind gusts up to 60 miles an hour. they've shut down both directions of the bay bridge waiting for this storm to go by. gusts over 60 miles an hour would make it very dangerous to drive on that. i suspect they will open up about 15 or 20 minutes. not a lot going on, just some beneficial light to moderate rain. the only severe weather game in town is over on the eastern shore. shore. we will talk
